IN THE wake of the Scottish referendum result, Prime Minister David Cameron has pledged a new and fair settlement for all parts of the UK.

In which case he must be fair to Britain’s oldest country, Saxland, which was established by King Alfred’s grandfather Ecgbeorht in AD865.

The new constitutional settlement for federal Britain must include a written constitution.

That cannot be rushed in the way Cameron is proposing.

Young Saxland will not allow Cameron to get away with a botched job unnoticed.

The result of the referendum, however, must not be used as an excuse to give further devolution to Scotland and Wales, and to kick Saxish and English parliaments into the long grass as too difficult to deal with.

The Scots have burst through the Westminster bubble. We Saxons now have the opportunity to take measures to remedy our democratic deficit.

Saxland will not be satisfied with the dog’s dinner of English Votes for English laws (EVEL).

EVEL is being pushed by certain Tories, such as Wiltshire MP James Gray, as a way of avoiding giving the English an English parliament.

It won’t do. The only way to deal with the asymmetry of the new federation is an English parliament in an English super region, e.g., in Leeds or Nottingham, and a Saxish super region with its own parliament.
