IN my recent local election campaigning I met and spoke to a number of interesting people. Many were concerned about the political landscape of the UK and this country's connection with the EU.

I would not deny that some of the legislation initiated by the EU in respect of improving our environment is useful.

However, it seems that the EU, through the European Commission, sought to increase ferry passenger charges by requiring ferry companies to carry higher insurance cover. This would have impacted on our local ferries and more importantly, upon travellers to and from the mainland to the Isle of Wight.

Another issue that also should be a matter of concern. Privacy within your own home and in the garden should reflect our British way of life.

I am told that EU regulation now permits a neighbour to install a CCTV camera to be focused on your premises. The CCTV tape can have prints taken off and used for whatever purpose your neighbour may see fit.

I believe this to be wrong in the previous British sense of the law. But alas, the installation of a CCTV camera by your neighbour to view 24/365 is now permitted by EU law.

Would other Daily Echo readers be happy to be filmed by CCTV by their neighbours?
