Why we don't build ships IN reply to the question "Why aren't super liners built in Britain? (Letters, April 28), I worked in Harland and Wolff's shipyard in Belfast, the largest shipbuilder in Europe. It is now more or less empty.
The chairman of P&O wanted his fleet extended and built in Britain. The Blair government refused to put money into the project.
But France, Germany and Sweden did - that was another nail in the coffin of shipbuilding in the UK.
