I AM obliged to G Lewis's response (June 9) to my letter in which I set out the EU's determination to destroy the Royal Mail, including the post office network.

The facts speak for themselves. Post offices (particularly rural) are being closed, and the post office unions are in conflict with the management. All part of the EU's plan. And for good measure, what about our red Royal Mail post boxes? When will they be sealed for ever?

For Mr Lewis's benefit, why not read the detailed and interesting history of postal services in Macmillan's Encyclopaedia (page 82 - see Post). It clearly explains Rowland Hill's contribution to the setting up of a community-to-community postal service and all that flowed from it, such as rural post offices, red pillar boxes, from Land's End to John O'Groats.

Good UKIP thinking on the part of Sir Rowland Hill.
