John Vivian (letters June30th) need have no worries about the aid budget being reduced as result of the merger of the Foreign Office & The Dept of International Development.
The budget of 0.7% of Gross National Income (GNI) was enshrined in UK law in 2015.
However, as the GNI may well be significantly lower this year as a result of three months of lockdown, this will eventually feed through to a lower budget.
If the merger results in more targeted payments to accountable bodies then I'm all for it.
Until a few years ago we were still contributing to the economies of India & China.
UK is always one of the largest contributors (behind the United States) to Overseas Aid.
I wish this were more appreciated at home and abroad.
