WHY should the taxpayer not pay for the election expenses of individuals when standing for election to government?
The cost for individual candidates (say £10,000 and any increase only by the rate of inflation and bomb proofed against change except by referendum) could be met and the cost of the election would, as usual, be paid for by the electorate.
However, the cost for the individual MP to sit in Parliament must be paid for by the party he represents and not by the taxpayer.
This would ensure the party is funded by individuals, which is supposed to happen at the present time but, the parties would no longer have the means or necessity to run huge campaigns.
It could even be that candidates may call and speak to electors in the hope of getting their vote!
