I THOROUGHLY agree with Mrs Shari Evans (Letters, Nov 29). The current proposals for the Spitfire monument are disappointing. The suggested position of the plane, as though it had just fallen out of the sky and landed on its tail, has a total lack of dignity. The correct depiction surely should be that of a Spitfire or Spitfires in flight, caught and attached to earth by the slimmest possible means. We do not have to rival or even mirror the Angel of the North. We should not be in the business of bigger and better, but rather of creating something that does justice to the Spitfire itself, its creator and all associated with it, which indeed could be said to be all of us. A wonderful idea has been launched, but this prototype is perhaps too big, and lacking in gravitas. I do hope that more thought will be given to this excellent and important project.
