OVER recent weeks we have had constant whinging from Conservative councillors about what they say is lack of support from Central Government. No government in the last 30 years has given the financial support local councillors feel it should get, but this Labour Government is doing better than any other Government during this time.

Perhaps it is too much to ask that the same whinging Conservatives, might congratulate the Labour Government for providing funding for 700 training places for young people and over-50s in and around Southampton to require the skills a modern economy needs.

In Southampton we have large numbers of young people not in work or education and without the skills a modern economy needs. By giving those same young people the skills for a decent job and wider opportunities, we will tackle deprivation and inequalities. If we don't, then Southampton and the UK's robust economy will go into decline. So lets hope Conservative councillors can stop whinging and get on with representing the best interest of all our citizens and not just the few they seem to be doing at the moment.

JOHN NOON, Bargate Labour Councillor, Southampton City Council.
