ROMSEY is the Tories' No 1 target Lib Dem seat in the whole of the country, which is why Lord Ashcroft gives them thousands of pounds each year to pay for their campaigning and why they orchestrate letters in the press attacking Sandra Gidley while posing as ordinary constituents.

In such circumstances, a Lib Dem by-election win in the heart of Romsey itself is not "neither here nor there'' as Tom Spring-Smyth pretends, but of very great significance when the result is a Lib Dem majority increased from 188 last May to 333 now and their share of the vote up four per cent and the Tory vote down by ten per cent.

Instead of trying to wriggle out of acknowledging a remarkable Lib Dem victory against all the odds, what Mr Spring-Smyth should be doing is explaining to us all why the Tories failed so miserably given all the financial help they get from outside. If he can, that is.
