LAST year just on £10,000 has been given to Macmillan Cancer Support by the generous people of Southampton. The local supermarkets have allowed our team of volunteers to collect in their stores on six weekends and raised just over £6,000.

In nearly 100 various shops, pubs, clubs and other establishments in the Southampton area are boxes on the counters so that their customers can put the odd coins in. This has amounted to nearly £4,000 in small coins.

Special mention should be made of the landlady of one public house who each year has an event for Macmillan over one week and this year collected just over £900. And also for a shop in the city centre whose two boxes which have to be emptied regularly and contained over £800 this year.

This money has been used in our appeal to fund three nurses at the main centres in Hampshire and also towards Patient Grants.

This is to help the families who need financial support to meet the cost of essential services because of cancer.
