MORE police on the streets is something I think most people in Southampton would welcome.

Southampton's Conservative councillors want to do all we can to support the police. We have proposed scrapping council tax for special constables, to encourage more people to sign up and to show that we value and respect local people who come forward to help make their communities safer.

If we could recruit an extra 50 or 100 specials in Southampton it would make a big difference.

Before we can go ahead we need approval from the Government.

Hampshire Police have written to the Home Secretary seeking her approval and currently the issue is sat in her intray awaiting her decision.

I hope that we can draw support from across all political parties on this issue and that our local Labour MPs will back this excellent policy.

The cost to the taxpayer is tiny and the benefits to the community are enormous.
