IF Lib Dem councillor Steve Sollitt wants to help relieve the unfair burden of excessive council tax on Southampton residents he should be backing the Conservatives.

Over the past ten years Labour has more than doubled council tax in South-ampton, through a combination of starving the city of Government funding and through poor management of the local finances.

Worst hit by the excessive rises in council tax have been pensioners who have seen the council tax outstrip the increases in the state pension by more than 40 per cent.

The Conservatives are saying enough is enough. We are proposing a real terms reduction in council tax and for pensioner households we want further a 10 per cent discount.

Reforming council tax nationally will take a change of Government. There hasn't been a Liberal Government since the 1920s and it is unlikely that there will ever be again.

The Lib Dems can, however, make a difference locally. If they want to reduce the unfair burden of council tax on Southampton residents, they should back the Conservatives.
