THE Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial in London's Hyde Park is sinking because it was allegedly constructed in a rush.
That may be true, but it certainly wasn't started in a rush.
The committee sat thinking about it for seven years. Then came up with the present monstrosity. It closed after one day with blocked pumps. After six months it was closed again because children were slipping up in it. Then no one was allowed to paddle in it.
In 2005 it was closed for four months at a cost of £7,000 for redesign.
Then gravel had to be put around to stop a mud bath round the edges.
Hairline cracks appeared costing another £1,000 to repair. It has been voted the most disappointing tourist attraction by foreign visitors.
Now, because of subsidence, engineering experts say it should be pulled down and rebuilt.
Don't bother! No one wants it. Pull it down by all means but replace it with what everyone wanted - a proper fountain, not a trench that people could stamp in.
It has been more of an insult than a memorial.
