WE, the undersigned, reside at Fielders Court, a retirement complex in West End, and consequently rely upon the Red Rocket bus service for travelling to and from Eastleigh, Hedge End and Hamble.

Our residents are disturbed to learn that as from February 24 this service will run at peak times only, resulting in packed buses unable to cope with additional elderly and/or disabled people at very busy times.

We endorse the comments of the various councillors in the recent Daily Echo article regarding the elderly and students being seriously affected.

We would point out there are many other people who rely on the local bus services and fare-paying passengers need an incentive to return to using public transport.

Cutting services will increase the use of cars on this area's already inadequate roads.

West End's shopping area is limited to one hilly street, and has an increasing population of older citizens.

At present the Red Rocket service provides access to other areas with better facilities.

The question of concessionary fares is a matter for the bus company to settle with Hampshire County Council.

We are acutely aware that there have been political promises for free bus transport for the over 60s throughout the land as from April 1, 2008. Only at peak times if you travel by Red Rocket!

SA WHITE and others, West End.
