SOME readers might like to know that the photograph which has appeared twice recently claiming to "Southampton Docks in the 1960s" was taken on August 22, 1936, as it was the first time that all the berths in the New Docks (now Western Docks) were occupied.
Of the ships in the photograph only three were in existence in the 1960s.
The ships - starting from the right: Empress of Britain, which was burnt out and sunk in October 1940.
Europa, which after the war became Liberte of the French Line. Scrapped 1962.
Montrose became armed merchant cruiser HMS Forfar. Torpedoed and sunk 12/1940.
Orontes, broken up in Spain 1962.
Strathmore, sold Greeks 1963 for pilgrim service. Broken up 1969.
Bencruchan, mined and sunk off Alexandria, July 1941.
Bellerophon, broken up 1948.
Majestic, became naval training ship HMS Caledonia in 1937 - burnt out and sunk 1939 (September) BERT, Southampton
