I WORK as a HGV driver and travel all over the UK.
I feel utterly disgustedby with the facilities for HGV drivers in Southampton docks. There are no toilets and nowhere to buy food since the shop closed.
It's time the council built a secure truck stop with showers, good home cooked food, a safe and secure place to park overnight for HGV drivers (Rownhams Services does not offer these).
A truck stop would also help to fill the city coffers because transport companies would pay to use a secure overnight truckstop for obvious reasons.
At weekends the council could use the truck stop as a park-and-ride for shoppers, instead of driving in to the congested city which will get worse when the Ikea stores opens. It would also cut down on pollution.
I'm sure the police would welcome a secure truck stop because it would reduce crime.
Trucks are important to the city of Southampton.
If you bought something in a shop, a truck brought it to be sold. No trucks mean no goods.
