I was shocked and deeply saddened at the news that Ian Faletto, stationmaster at Lymington Town and other stations on the Lymington branch line, had been dismissed by South West Trains.
This was reportedly for his removing a supermarket trolley from the tracks, before the first train of the day, without following the correct health and safety procedure.
Ian Faletto is an exceptional individual and a superb ambassador for the railway.
He lives and breathes trains and made Lymington Town station a truly welcoming home-from-home.
I travel widely by rail throughout the UK and to meet someone as dynamic, customer-focused and “old school” as Ian is an absolute delight.
If Ian’s iniative and a can-do attitude has somehow led to a breach of health and safety rules, then I urge South West Trains to review their reported action in dismissing him. Can they please give due consideration to the bigger picture and not simply throw the rule book at Ian after his decades of dedicated service to the railway.
