RE the letter, on July 14, concerning council staff in Marlands House – other items come to mind.

The staff are predominantly women yet there is no rest room with facilities to lie down if unwell. If you are ill and need to lie down you can use the overcrowded office floor.

There is also no welfare room to allow staff to move away from their desks at meal breaks.

You can take your lunch in The Park in good weather, otherwise eat and drink at your desk.

Do any managers accept such workplace conditions for themselves? Obviously not.

Who is responsible for the poor working conditions?

Group managers and property services (the nation’s favourite council contractor, Capita).

Perhaps the next reorganisation of Social Services will correct these problems. As the staff know, there is always money available for another reorganisation.

Will one of the managers or councillors please tell us when the national regulations about workplace conditions were rescinded? Also, when did the laws about contracts change to allow employers to declare that current contracts are null and void and replace them with new contracts containing worsened conditions (and if you don’t accept, you’ve lost your job)?

AG WHITELOCK, Hedge End.
