SO Norwich Union wants to charge by the mile for motor insurance cover. If you are an honest, law-abiding person you will probably pay for this. However a lot of of car owners do not have insurance or tax, so for them it won't make any difference at all.
I suspect this is not really aimed at young drivers as I am given to understand, but is a way of introducing at a later date by legislation, road charging.
If insurance companies really wanted to curb accidents, then why not introduce the same system as for motorcyclists? By restricting the power, size, weight and speed of cars to new and young drivers, and also raising the minimum age of driving to 21 they would not only get rid of the majority of boy and girl racers but reduce so-called accidents.
I would like to congratulate Hugh Cleverly (Letters, October 3) for his common sense approach. If all potential car drivers rode bicycles and then motorcycles, they would not only be aware of things that they are ignorant of, but make far superior drivers.
JOHN FREEMANTLE, Nursling.
