MANY people will remember before the election in 2010 how David Cameron went out of his way to improve the Conservatives’ image in regard to environmental issues.

He travelled to the Arctic to be pictured with huskies, made some speeches and announced that we should vote blue to get green.

He said that his would be the greenest government ever. Fine words.

In response to the Prime Minister’s commitment to environment issues, I asked the question at a city council meeting as to how much recycling had increased in the six years of the Tory council in Southampton.

In anticipation of the Tories’ newfound green credentials, I expected a rapid rise since they took power.

I was surprised however to find that the rate had actually decreased since 2006.

The national average is now 42 per cent and increasing but only 23 per cent and decreasing in Southampton. Southampton is 19th from the bottom of the national league tables.

While Southampton Football Club went from League One to the Premiership, Tory Southampton council were languishing in the Blue Square South.

What a terrible record.
