I READ with interest your article regarding the Fifty Shilling Tailors (Hampshire Heritage, May 8) When I first met my husband in 1951 he was working in the Fifty Shilling Tailors, High Street, Winchester. He moved on to become “first sales” at both Above Bar and East Street shops, also doing relief work at Salisbury. Eventually he moved back to Winchester and became manager there until 1963. The shop was now John Collier.
During this time ladies’ costumes were introduced (made to measure), also shirts and ties. He left in 1963 to pursue another career.
Thank you for bringing back happy memories to us both.
MRS JOYCE FARMER, Winchester.
