A 35-year-old man from Southampton has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after an assault in Northam last night.

Just after 8pm on Tuesday night, May 14, police were called by South Central Ambulance Service to reports of an assault on Kent Street in Southampton.

Officers attended Kent Street and a man in his 40s was taken to hospital.

Police have confirmed the man remains in hospital in a serious condition.

Initially, police arrested a 35-year-old Southampton man on suspicion of assault, but police have said the victim’s injuries are more serious than initially thought.

As a result, the 35-year-old man has now been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

A spokesperson for the force said: “We were called just after 8pm yesterday evening (Tuesday 14 May) by colleagues at South Central Ambulance Service to reports of an assault on Kent Street in Southampton.

“Officers attended and a man in his 40s was taken to hospital where he remains in a serious condition.

“A 35-year-old man from Southampton has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

“A 34-year-old woman from Southampton has been arrested on suspicion of intentionally assisting/encouraging the commission of an offence.

“Both remain in police custody at this time.

“An investigation has been launched and officers will remain at the scene today while enquiries continue.

“We would like to reassure local residents that all those involved are known to each other, and we don’t believe there to be a wider risk to the public at the current time.

“Anyone with concerns or questions is asked to please speak to officers in the area today.”
