Watford will meet Leeds United on the last day of the season on Saturday knowing that a win will secure promotion to the Premier League, if Hull City fail to beat champions Cardiff City at home.

The Hornets closed the gap on the second-placed Tigers to a single point after beating Leicester City 2-1 last night but they knew that if Steve Bruce’s side won at Barnsley today, they would have to settle for the play-offs. However, Hull failed to capitalise on their big opportunity and suffered a 2-0 defeat at the Tykes.

Those results makes the mathematics simple.

If Watford end what has already been a memorable regular campaign with a 24th win of the season, only a Hull victory at the KC Stadium can deny Gianfranco Zola promotion in his first season at the helm at Vicarage Road.

Even a draw could be sufficient for the Hornets because if the Tigers lose, Watford’s goal difference would be enough to see them snatch second spot.

Hull may have the mathematical edge going into the last day but the momentum appears to have swung in the Hornets' favour. Zola's men have won their last two, scoring six in the process, while Hull have failed to find the net in their last two outings, picking up a single point following a nervous display at home to already-relegated Bristol City before this afternoon's defeat.
