FIGURES released by the DVLA reveal that in excess of 8,000 people are still driving despite having amassed 12 points on their licences.

Indeed, one of them is still behind the wheel having collected 36 points, three have 33 points and another thirty have more than 24 points.

Which begs the question, why bother with a points system at all?

The courts are far too lenient on drivers who persistently flout the law, putting other road users at risk.

Why should someone who has amassed more than twice the number of points required for disqualification be permitted to continue driving simply because a ban may cause ‘exceptional hardship’?

If their car is so important to them they should drive in accordance with the rules of the road and within the law. If a ban means they lose their livelihood, too bad. The 12-point driving ban should be automatic, not discretionary.
