Labour has narrowly won a by-election, taking a seat on Kirklees Council from the Tories. Labour candidate Simon Alvy won the Liversedge and Gomersal by-election after voters went to the polls on Thursday. He polled 1,517, defeating Conservative’s Sharon Light by 139 votes. The poll was called after Conservative councillor Margaret Bates resigned on health grounds.
