BRIAN Stafford walked away with the top prize for the heaviest berry at the Holmes Chapel Gooseberry show on Saturday.
Brian took the award for his Mr Chairman variety, which topped the scales at 25 pennyweights two grains – down from his prize clinching effort in 2011.
Malcolm Quayle, secretary of the Holmes Chapel show, told the Guardian 13 people were showing at this year’s event.
“We had 20 or 30 people who headed down to take it all in, we finished around 5pm and it went pretty well and was quite relaxing,” he said.
“The Victoria Club is getting more and more busy after they spent money on it and people were playing cricket and bowls, so there was plenty of people about.”
