DUNDONNELL has set himself up for a crack at the Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot when victorious in the King Charles II Stakes at Newmarket on Saturday.

The Roger Charlton-trained three-year-old was disappointing in the Craven on his comeback, having shown such promise as a juvenile, but looked more like his old self at Headquarters.

While Charlton is not ruling out stepping him back up to a mile again in the future, he feels seven furlongs is fine for now.

"We had a great day at Newmarket on Saturday with Dundonnell putting up a tough effort to win. He settled well and stayed on up the hill," the Beckhampton handler told his website, www.rogercharlton.com.

"He gave the impression that he could at some stage try eight furlongs again, but his most likely target at this stage is the Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot."

Charlton suffered a disappointing reverse at Newbury in the Lockinge, however, when Cityscape ran no race whatsoever, a display his trainer put down to the fast ground.

"Cityscape was feeling the ground as soon as he started to come under pressure and he came home in his own time," said Charlton.

"I was initially concerned that he might have picked up an injury but he seemed fine on his return home.

"It was a strange race with so many of the fancied runners performing well below their form, with the exception of the impressive winner."
