A micro-brewery has been forced to pull a Citizen Smith logo on its beer following complaints from actor Robert Lindsay.

By The Horns Brewery Company, based in Summerstown, Earlsfield, received a call from the actor's publicist claiming Lindsay did not want to be linked with an alcoholic drink.

Citizen Smith, created by Only Fools and Horses writer John Sullivan, features Lindsay as a Marxist with aspirations to turn Tooting communist.

The award-winning Wolfie Smith amber ale featured a graphic of Citizen Smith in his famous "Freedom for Tooting" pose.

Since the phone call the brewery has placed a red sticker over the character's face, but still plan to keep the name.

Alex Ball, co-owner, said the design was created to look different from the original sitcom and does not mirror Lindsay's face.

He said: "On one side, we could have said it is not that much of a similarity.

"But we are a small company, I pretty much said we didn't care - it is more for the locals and the reference of that character."

He said they offered the actor free samples of the beer, but do not know if he has supped it yet.

The American style amber ale is one of the most popular created by the brewery, which is sold online for £3.14 a bottle.

It is available to purchase at Oddbins across the capital, as well as the Little Bar, Mitcham Road, Tooting, and The Earlsfield Deli, Garratt Lane, Earlsfield.
