CCTV images have been released after a vandal sprayed graffiti on trains, platforms and pillars at York station.

British Transport Police (BTP) officers released the images of a man they want to speak to in connection with the incident, which took place in the early hours of Saturday, April 11.

PC Nick Storey said the man entered the station between 3am and 6am and climbed onto the tracks to spray two carriages, before attempting to assault a member of rail staff.

PC Storey said: "To access some of the places he vandalised, we believe the man would have had to trespass onto the railway tracks, which is incredibly dangerous.

"Just before 6am, the man was confronted by a member of rail staff who challenged him, but he threw some punches which didn’t connect before running off onto the East Coast Mainline tracks.

"I’d estimate the damage this man caused to be at around £2,000.

"The costs associated with cleaning trains means it is ultimately the fare-paying passenger who has to pay for this damage. BTP takes criminal damage in the form of graffiti on the rail network extremely seriously and we will seek to catch and prosecute those who commit such crimes."

Anyone with information or who recognises the man in the images should phone BTP, free, on 0800 405040, or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.
