A plan designed to improve the lives of residents in Hertsmere was agreed by the borough council last week.

The strategy, called Hertsmere Together, aims to improve the following six aspects of life: access to services, like housing; the environment, including protecting the Green Belt and minimising waste production; economic development; safety, including reducing crime and providing more for young people to do; learning and leisure, including improving the cultural life in the borough; and health, such as reducing the misuse of drugs.

Groups involved in delivering the improvements will include Hertsmere Borough Council, Hertsmere Primary Care Trust, Hertsmere Citizens Advice Bureau, Hertfordshire County Council, Hertsmere Community Voluntary Support, Hertfordshire police and the Learning and Skills Council.

The strategy was produced following a MORI survey of 1,014 residents in the borough, and consultation with groups such as Borehamwood Action For Elderly Residents, young people at the council's Pizza Meets, town and parish councils and Borehamwood Community Partnership.

The Local Government Act 2000 required local authorities to prepare community strategies, as part of the Government's drive to modernise local government.

The strategy was approved by the borough council's executive last Wednesday.
