A plan for the Co-op to open a new shop in Burley-in-Wharfedale has sparked complaints from residents.

The supermarket has applied for permission to sell alcohol at the new shop in Main Street from 5am to 11pm daily.

But eight letters have been sent in by locals concerned at the effect this could have on the neighbourhood.

Bradford Council’s licensing department has not revealed the identities of the complainants, who cite fears about crime, noise and drunkenness.

One said: “The sale of alcohol from the early hours of the morning until late at night will attract a clientele that will disrupt life in this predominantly residential area, bringing noise and potentially rowdy elements to the detriment of those living nearby.”

In the Co-op’s application, it said staff would be trained to ask for proof of age, a CCTV system would be installed, the store would be fitted with a panic alarm and no deliveries would take place between 11pm and 6am.
