THIS is the scene left in front of recycling bins by fly-tippers in Southampton.

Books, children’s toys, and empty beer bottles and cans were amongst the piles left beside bins and clothing banks at Cannon Street, in Shirley.

A nearby shop manager has criticised the city council for not taking action against the fly-tipping.

CCTV is now in operation in the area, to help catch fly-tippers.

Dashty Azez, manager for Tani Sklep, a supermarket next to the bins, said: “We’ve spoke to the council a lot, and there’s rats that come from there into our shop.

“It affects our business.

“As well as the massive rats, we get a bad smell as well.

“We didn’t know how to control it, but later on we contacted Rentokil Pest Control and we now have a contract with them.

“They come out either once-a-week or once-a-fortnight, and there’s traps up now.

“We’ve been here for nearly six years now, and it’s always like this.”

Dashty is also the manager of Twoj Sklep, a supermarket just off of Shirley High Street.

He added: “We clean the whole area at this store, and we have our own bins out the front which we clean ourselves and send our staff out to do.

“I just want it clear every day and every morning.

“If the council can’t afford that, then they should give it to a private company.”

On this occasion, there appears to be general house waste, cardboard and paper, and even a pair of shoes.

Southampton City Council cabinet member for Transport and Public Realm, Jacqui Rayment, confirmed that CCTV is now in place in the location.

Cllr Rayment said: “It is a shame that the people who have travelled to the site could not be bothered to take the rubbish to the tip.

“We installed CCTV yesterday so we will investigate.

“If this helps identify who did it on this occasion, we will take action.

“We have a crew that visits the site every-day during the week to keep on top of this patch.”

Some of the bins at the site are collecting donations for causes such as the British Heart Foundation, Wave 105’s Cash4Kids and Traid.

There was also TV boxes, polystyrene, wooden boards, and a shopping trolley located behind the bins.

This comes just over a fortnight since rotting turkey carcasses were left amongst other waste in Southampton.

As well as the turkey carcasses, a bottle of urine was found at the rubbish dump in a car park beside the River Itchen in Southampton.

At the site on Woodmill Lane, dogs were seen scavenging for food, on at least one occasion.

Residents criticised the council on this occasion, stating it began before Christmas.
