CAMPAIGNERS have launched an attempt to replace a Hampshire skatepark which closed three years ago after failing a safety inspection.

Located next to the former police station in Jones Lane, Hythe, the facility was forced to shut after it was revealed that the tarmac needed replacing, along with the ramps and other items of equipment.

Now the youngest member of Hythe and Dibden Parish Council has launched a campaign to raise £400 to help fund a new facility.

Cllr Matthew Kitcher, vice-chairman of the Waterside Skate & Ride group, said: “Over the last few months we have formed a committee and are in the process of setting up a local charity with the aim of getting our beloved skatepark back up and running.

“It was such a shame to lose our old one. However, it just wasn’t fit for public use.”

An 87-year-old woman living near the site has voiced her support for the campaign to provide the village with a new skatepark.

In a letter to Cllr Stephanie Osborne she said it would be a “great pity” if the previous facility was not replaced as it provided children with fresh air, exercise, and the ability to develop excellent co-ordination and balancing skills.

She also referred to an application by McCarthy & Stone to replace the old police station with flats for older residents.

“I have heard that when the new apartments are built older people will find the noise annoying. I am sure there are many more older people who enjoy watching and hearing young people enjoying themselves,” she said.

Waterside Skate & Ride has also received a donation from a Hythe councillor.

A spokesperson said: “We would like to say a massive ‘thank you’ to Cllr Malcolm Wade for his donation of £100. It means a lot to have the his support.”

Campaigners have been calling for the facility to be replaced since it shut in 2017.

Speaking at the time Hythe publican Leighton O’Hara said: “How can we sit here and allow them to take away the skatepark, which has been used by many children over the years?”
