Witnesses have described the major emergency service response that followed a fire in a Southampton tower block which left one person injured.
Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that crews from St Mary's, Redbridge, Hightown and Eastleigh responded at 19:34 last night to reports of the smell of burning and a fire alarm sounding in a flat in Charter House, Canute Road.
One person was rescued from the flat and received "emergency care" from firefighters before being transferred to the care of South Central Ambulance Service.
Residents reported seeing a large emergency service presence on Neptune Way, which continued for "about an hour."
Martin Ball, a resident of nearby Provincial House said: "I saw five fire engines and about three fire cars as well as ambulances and police cars.
"I saw they put a crane up with a light.
"I didn't know what was going on because I couldn't smell any smoke."
Mike Florit, a resident at the penthouse apartment in Charter House said: "If there was a fire, we didn't see it.
"We didn't hear any smoke alarms going off. We weren't evacuated, no-one came up and asked us to leave the apartment.
"All the apartments have got smoke alarms in them and if they continue to go off it automatically goes through to the fire brigade, and quite rightly so.
"My wife, two kids and I stayed up in the apartment because we were quite confident there was not a lot going on."
He said the positioning of the crane indicated the fire was in one of the upper floors of the building.
Photos taken this morning show no damage to the upper exterior of the building.
Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed the fire was extinguished by 20.14pm.
Canute Road was closed in both directions at the junction with Neptune Way for around half an hour while crews attended the scene.
Neptune Way jct Canute Rd currently closed due to an on going incident. Access via Ocean Way.
