A MAN has been arrested following a theft from a vehicle in Southampton.

The arrest took place at 11pm yesterday after officers found someone sleeping in a van that did not belong to him at King Georges Avenue.

They woke him up and found several items in his rucksack including two sat navs, pliers and a pair of gloves.

A 47-year-old man from Southampton has been arrested on suspicion of theft from a motor vehicle and going equipped for theft of a motor vehicle.

One of the sat navs has been reunited with its owner but the owner of the other one has yet to be traced.

Anyone who believes they are the owner - and can identify the device - can contact police by calling 101 and quoting reference 44210194436.

A police spokesperson said: "We would like to take this opportunity to remind drivers to be vigilant, report anyone acting suspiciously and double check that your vehicles are locked at all times.

"We would also urge people to remove any valuables from their cars and vans.

"It is also a good idea to log any serial numbers or distinctive features for any items you have, so that if you have to report a theft, you can give us these details and we can then try to match them to any items we might later seize.

"It will help us to reunite stolen items to you quicker."
