A SOUTHAMPTON road has reopened after it was closed when a tree fell down yesterday morning.

Cobden Avenue has reopened after it was was closed in both directions yesterday when a tree came down at around 7am.

No one was injured in the incident, but the road had to be closed near the junction with Midanbury Lane as the council’s Tree Team worked to clear the blockage.

A diversion was put in place and motorists were advised to “avoid the area” as works were ongoing.

The road reopened at around 6.15pm yesterday.

This comes less than four years after a tree came down on the same road.

Bitterne Park ward councillor, David Fuller, said: "It's the second time this has happened in a relatively short period of time. When this happened before I spoke to the tree team at Southampton City Council and asked them to investigate it and check that nothing else in the area was in danger of falling and I was assured that it was a rare occurrence and that there wasn't any bigger issues here.

"But on the back of today I've gone back again and asked that all the tree's on that section of the road are inspected to make sure this doesn't happen again. I will be doing all I can to make sure if there are any issues that they are identified and dealt with."

Cllr Fuller added that it was "extremely lucky" that no one was injured when the tree fell.

A council spokesperson added: “High winds in May are most likely to have caused the tree to fall. We will know more towards the end of the week once we have cleared up and investigated the site thoroughly.”
