A PUBLIC inquiry will be held into plans to build up to 350 homes on farmland near the M27 motorway.

Miller Homes Ltd lodged an appeal after its proposal to redevelop a large area of land east of Down End Road, Fareham, was rejected by the borough council.

The company's application said 40% of the proposed new homes would be classed as affordable.

It added that the scheme would include a large amount of green space, plus new footpaths linked to the existing rights of way network and the potential for sports provision.

"The proposed development will complement the local character, working with the site's assets to create a unique and attractive new environment."

But the application sparked a huge number of objections and was rejected, largely on the grounds it would result in too much traffic using Downend Road.

The appeal lodged by Miller Homes will be heard at a public inquiry starting on August 3.

A government-appointed planning inspector will examine the company's proposal to build on arable land between the M27 and the Southampton to Portsmouth railway line.

A Public Notice giving details of the inquiry has been published by the council.
