A HAMPSHIRE football club is celebrating another good result - planning permission to enlarge its clubhouse.

AFC Totton has received consent to build two extensions to the building to create a bigger kitchen and a larger reception and waiting area.

It is the latest proposal to improve sports facilities in Totton to be approved by New Forest District Council.

In June AFC Totton received outline consent to build a "healthy living centre" for people deemed to be at risk of heart disease.

Run by Southampton-based Wessex Heartbeat, the centre will form part of a new 468-seater stand at the club's ground at Salisbury Road, Calmore.

AFC Totton and Wessex Heartbeat have agreed to work together to raise money for the charity and as well as raising awareness of how to stay healthy.

The new stand will be roughly the same height as the current one but 60% longer.

Last month Totton and Eling FC, which occupies an adjoining site, was given the go-ahead to build a timber-framed clubhouse and hospitality building.

Last year Tottonians RFC received consent for a single-storey extension to its clubhouse, a balcony extension and a tractor store.

AFC Totton is based at the Snows Stadium, opposite the Laurel Care Home.

Its application to extend the clubhouse said: "The reception area is deemed insufficient to provide a suitably covered waiting area for visitors within the clubhouse and this has been exacerbated following the implementation of Covid-19 related policies.

"The proposals will also facilitate (an) additional area for club merchandise to be displayed.

"The kitchen is required to be enlarged to provide services to spectators who will remain outside the clubhouse and will be served via a relocated serving hatch."

A report to councillors said the "modest" enlargements to the clubhouse would provide an existing club with better facilities.

It added: "It is considered that the proposed extensions would not have an adverse impact on the character of the surrounding area."

As reported in the Daily Echo, Aldi is drawing up proposals to build a new supermarket beside AFC Totton.

The scheme would represent a multi-million-pound investment in the area as well as delivering up to 40 full and part-time jobs.
