UP to 1,000 new parking spaces are set to be created across Southampton for residents, the council has announced.

It is not yet known where these sites will be.

However, Conservative councillors in Redbridge announced that there will be more than 350 new parking spaces in Millbrook and the Redbridge area.

Funding of over £6m has been allocated for the project though this is also under review as the assessment of the possible sites continues.

It is also said that parking could be delivered in three different forms, verge hardening, additional parking bays and/or a full car park being created.

Cabinet Member for Communities, Culture and Heritage at the city council, Cllr Spiros Vassiliou, told the Echo that a lot of the spaces being considered are areas where grass verges have been used to park on in the past, churning up mud and making them look “unsightly”.

He added: “One of our key policies at the election this year was to create 1,000 new parking spaces on our estates.

“Over the years residents have been complaining that some areas there is very limited parking or where there is some parking, it’s not proper parking, they’re just parking up on grass verges.

“We have begun working on drawing up plans for roads across Southampton where we think there may be a need.

“Once we’ve got a final list of roads that are within the arts of possible we will release those to the public. We will be consulting on every road with the residents.”

Cllr Vassiliou added that that he hopes to have a list of possible roads within the next couple of months.

The council’s corporate plan sets out that work should start on the project by March 2022.
