POLICE are continuing to use stingers as part of a campaign to tackle anti-social motorbike riding in Southampton.

Hants Roads Policing Unit has posted pictures following an incident in which a bike was brought to a sudden halt and the rider arrested.

One of the images a badly damaged tyre.

Officers tweeted: "To the naughty people of Soton. If you fail to stop, ride without due care and attention, we will sting your bike to stop you.

"We will find u when u run and our land shark Wilson will find your bike when you hide it from us. Rider arrested."

Earlier this month Hampshire police's Chief Constable Olivia Pinkney said officers were using the devices to tackle anti-social motorbike riding in the city.

Stingers - referred to as stop sticks by Mrs Pinkney - are normally used by police to puncture the tyres of cars.

But they have now been used in the last couple of weeks on motorbikes.

Nuisance motorbike riding has been described as a "blight" on parts of the city with more than 1,600 people signing a petition to call for barriers to stop motorbikes riding on public pathways.

Mrs Pinkney said 10 people have been arrested in Southampton throughout March in connection to illegal motorbike usage, and she said the force is deploying new tactics to tackle the problem.

"We do have the ability and do work to catch people who are driving in an anti-social way," she said.

"We do use drones as well so we can follow people around from the air as well.

"We've seized five stolen motorbikes and we've done a lot of really high-intensity patrols alongside the local authority to work out which areas are vulnerable."
