PLANNING chiefs are studying a proposal to create 14 flats by converting an empty menswear shop renowned for its art deco-style facade.

The former Burton store at Gosport was built in the late 1930s and boasts a foundation stone that was laid by the company's founder, Raymond Montague Burton.

Mr Burton was unable to speak English when he arrived in the UK in 1900.

But he became a general outfitter selling ready-made suits bought from a wholesaler and by 1929 had hundreds of shops, mills and factories.

Now a developer is seeking consent to convert the former Gosport branch, which closed several years ago.

Gosport's close proximity to Portsmouth Dockyard made it a prime target during the war. Burtons was one of the few buildings in the town centre that survived the bombing and post-war redevelopment.

The planning application says: "It's a typically vibrant and bold 1930s building not dissimilar to cinemas of the inter-war period.

"The building is a prime example of Burton’s art deco-style. It dominates the High Street and with its stone façade is a heavy contrast to the delicate facades of adjacent heritage assets.

"It is in great need of restoration if it is to once again provide a positive contribution to the local area."

Regen Gosport is seeking consent to extend the rear of the building and convert the complex into 14 flats whilst retaining a retail unit on the ground floor.

A public notice outlining the scheme has been published by Gosport Borough Council.
