DRIVERS could soon be charged every time they cross Eling Toll Bridge.

Motorists using the ancient bridge, which links two areas separated by Bartley Water and Eling Creek, are currently able to make a return journey for £1.

But Totton and Eling Town Council is thinking of charging drivers £1 each way.

The issue is due to be discussed by the amenities committee on Wednesday but Cllr David Harrison said there was no report setting out the reasons why the proposal was being put forward.

"I have frankly no idea what the arguments might be for changing from the current system whereby you pay the £1 for a whole day," he said.

"I think councillors attending a meeting to discuss such a change need to have advanced information about the financial situation, the reason why an increase might be justified, and exactly what the money will be used for.

"Will increasing charges necessarily bring in more income, or is it intended to persuade people to divert around the toll bridge and reduce traffic through Eling village?

"I am not a member of the committee myself but will get a say when the matter becomes before full council in a few weeks."
