HOUSING chiefs have unveiled plans to transform a site currently occupied by a 51-year-old retirement complex equipped with communal bathrooms.

Fareham Borough Council wants to replace the existing buildings on a site at Castle Street, Portchester, with 60 one and two-bedroom flats for the over-55s.

If the scheme is given the go-ahead the ageing Assheton Court will make way for a new purpose-built complex.

A housing statement that accompanies the application says: "Fareham Borough Council’s affordable housing strategy aims to provide the right homes in the right places.

"Assheton Court is not fit for purpose and refurbishment would not be able to overcome all the building’s shortcomings."

The statement cites narrow corridors, poor layout, and rarely-used communal rooms. It adds that the lift serving flats on the first floor is too small to accommodate a mobility scooter.

In 2019 the council agreed to build a new complex on the site and decided not to re-let any homes that became vacant.

The statement says the authority is building sheltered housing at Station Road, Portchester, and Assheton Court residents can move there, either temporarily or permanently, while the Castle Street site is redeveloped.

A design and access statement that also accompanies the application says the site is currently under-used.

The proposed new building will include a communal lounge and landscaped grounds.

The statement adds: "Fareham Housing (the housing department of Fareham Borough Council) is an affordable housing provider, with a mission to deliver good quality, affordable homes to people who need them most.

"The proposal accords with national, regional, and local planning policies.

"The architecture will be to a high-quality design using construction methods and materials which compliment the style and appearance of the best local architecture, with contemporary detailing.

"It will thus contribute positively to the overall character and visual amenity of the area."

The application has so far sparked only three comments from the public.

One of the letters says: "I hope the finished building, if approved, will not cause hedging to be removed or reduced in height.

"I hope it will also look modern and pleasing on the eye and attract new businesses to Portchester precinct, which itself is looking tired and out of date."
