A MAN has been arrested by police investigating allegations of a sexual assault near the Southampton branch of Primark.

Officers say a 19-year-old Southampton man has been detained on suspicion of sexually assaulting a woman in Above Bar Street on October 2.

The alleged assault took place between 2.40am and 2.55am.

A woman in her 20s said she was near Primark and the shoe shop Size? when she was approached by a man who tried to kiss her.

She said he sexually assaulted her twice over her clothing before walking off.

Earlier this week police appealed for information and issued an image of a man they wanted to speak to in connection with the incident.

Today a police spokesperson said: "Since the appeal was launched, a 19-year-old Southampton man has been arrested on suspicion of sexual assault on a female and remains in custody at this time. Enquiries are ongoing."

Anyone with information can contact Hampshire police on 101 or report online, quoting crime reference number 44220400261.
