POLICE patrols will be stepped up in Southampton tonight as England play in the World Cup.

Officers will be in and around the city centre to ensure all football fans have a fun yet safe evening.

Swathes of people are expected to flock to sports bars and pubs as England take on France in the quarter-final clash.

As part of Operation Defender, there will be extra officers from response and patrol and neighbourhoods policing teams in the city centre.

Extra resources from partners, including volunteers from St John's ambulance, will also be in the area to offer support where needed.

Their presence coincides with the force’s annual drink and drug driving enforcement campaign, Operation Holly.

The operation sees an increase in officer patrols and enforcement activity throughout December.

With World Cup matches as well as Christmas parties taking place this December, officers are calling on all motorists to think about the consequences of driving while impaired and to arrange alternative transport.
