FUEL started leaking from a tanker that left the road and rolled into a ditch in the New Forest.

The 18-tonne vehicle was being driven along Warren Lane, near Beaulieu, when the accident happened on Wednesday.

Firefighters from four fire stations - Beaulieu, Lymington, Redbridge and Romsey - were sent to the scene.

A Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service  (HIWFRS) spokesperson said: "They were alerted to a fuel tanker that left the road, was on its side and had begun to leak diesel.

"The driver, who had injured his arms, was treated by firefighters before being taken to hospital.

"Specialist equipment was used to stem the leak and clean up the spillage.

"The incident was handed over to the recovery team before HIWFRS returned to station at 4.30pm."

Warrens Lane is a winding route that leads from St Leonard's to Needs Ore Point, which overlooks the Solent.
