PLANS to build a block of flats in a Southampton street have been given the go-ahead.

The city council has approved proposals for a four-storey building containing four one-bedroom homes on land next to 51 Victoria Road, Woolston.

A previous proposal to build a three-storey block of five flats on the site was rejected in February last year.

The council said the scheme would have a "poor relationship" with Victoria Road and Obelisk Road.

A report examing the latest application said the flats would be an efficient use of land within Woolston Local Centre.

It added: "The design and layout are improved compared to the previously submitted scheme and has taken account of the character of the area."

The report said the building would result in the loss of open land but added: "The proposal provides an acceptable level of amenity to neighbouring properties.

"The level of parking provision is acceptable and would not result in impacts on the local highway network."
