A POPULAR business aiming to help people on a tight budget has opened a second store in Southampton

Clothes 1 Pound has expanded just five months after opening its first shop in Shirley Road.

The family-run business, started by Wayne Hammond, sells garments, old and new, for just £1.

The new site on 6 West End Road in Bitterne Village is bigger and busier, says Waye.

Speaking to the Echo, the dad-of-three said: "It's exactly what we wanted to happen.

"Straight away we were selling 80 to 100 items on the first day, which is just unheard of in any sort of business.

"For most businesses, it takes longer to take off."

He added: "We do have designer clothes, but people who come into our shop don't care about labels. They just need clothes that are affordable and cheap so that they can save some money.

"We have all sorts of things in the shop, such as ladies' trousers, jackets, shoes, and even a wedding dress.

"We do give away kids' school uniforms, but we don't have any at the moment because they are sold as soon as we put them out.

"And it's not just school uniforms that sell out quickly; even adult work uniforms do.

"You see it on the news how people are not able to afford basic necessities and we are trying really hard to help them in any way possible.

"I think a store like this one is just needed in the community."

Wayne is looking to open more outlets across the city in the near future to help people upgrade their wardrobes without breaking the bank.

The store buys clothes at 40p per kilo and donates ten per cent of all profits to the NSPCC.

The Bitterne shop officially opened on Sunday, March 12.
