Upset, disappointment, and resignation: just three words used to describe Saints fans following the club’s relegation.

Hundreds of fans left St Mary’s Stadium before the final whistle on Saturday.

For them, Southampton FC’s fate was sealed the minute Fulham scored their first goal.

The St Mary’s side lost 0-2 to the Cottagers, ending their 11-year stint in the Premier League.

Fan Mike Goff, who watched the match with his daughter Ellah, said he expected this result.

He said: "The writing’s been on the wall for a long time.

"There’s no fight, there’s no passion. We need a complete clearout – a company rebuild from top to bottom.

"We need a manager and new players."

But for long-time Saints fans Elaine Bushrod and Jenny Rogers letting go of a previous manager was the club’s downfall.

Elaine said: “We wish they hadn’t let Ralph Hasenhuttl go and we blame all those awful supporters that got him out.

“We blame all those supporters. They get what they wanted and now we’re all suffering because of them.

“Saints should’ve kept Ralph.”

Jenny said: “The players gave their all so what else can they do?

“A lot of people had taken our best players that we had before this team came in, and that’s what’s happened.

“We’ve followed Saints through all the way from Division One and we will renew our season tickets.”

She added: “We thought relegation would happen.

“We did have a goal disallowed which was unfortunate. If that had stayed in it would’ve been a different game.”

Premier League fans Wayne Challen and his daughter Madeline Challen travelled from Midhurst to watch the match.

Wayne said: “Relegation has been on the cards for quite a while.

“There’s a striker who can’t score more than five goals in a season, they’re devoid of ideas, and it’s just lacking everywhere.”

Fellow fan Steve Shaw said: “It’s been obvious for months that we were going to be relegated, but it still feels really empty now it’s confirmed.

“Not sure if I will go next season unless they make some changes to the team as it’s been dire football for most of this season.”
