A SOUTHAMPTON seat of learning features in the top 100 universities in a global league table - for the fifth year running.

The latest QS world rankings have placed the University of Southampton in 81st position out of 1,500 others, putting it in the top six per cent worldwide.

The university was also highlighted for its impressive employment outcome rates among its students, ranking 12th in the UK.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Mark E Smith said the top 100 rankings confirmed Southampton’s commitment to inspiring excellence among its community and beyond to create an inclusive world where its students and graduates prosper.

He added: "Our position in the QS rankings is a real indicator of our global reputation as a leading university which pioneers world-class, life-changing research and champions excellent education to shape the next generation of scientists and scholars worldwide."

The QS world rankings, now in its 20th year, rates universities based on the impact of their research and global reputation – and for the first time has included sustainability and the number of students who find employment after graduating.

The university was specially praised by QS judges for creating an inclusive environment for its international students.

The latest QS results cap a successful six months for Southampton, which earlier this year saw six subjects placed in the top 50 of the QS’s associated world subject rankings.

For student Ananya Sharma, from New Delhi in India, the university's high league table ratings were enough to encourage her to apply.

She said: "Southampton offers many additional resources to students which go beyond academics – additional language classes, mental wellbeing support, career and employability advice, there are so many resources available worth seeking out.
